My ESRC-funded research on mass emergency evacuations examined public behaviour during the 2005 London bombings and other incidents and used virtual reality simulations in experiments. This research showed that a new shared social identity can arise in emergencies and shape supportive behaviours among survivors. These findings on the psychology of collective resilience are used in guidance and training by the UK Fire & Rescue Service (National Resilience CBRN mass decontamination training), the Government Communication Service, and the Resilience Directorate. Since 2011, I have run a continuing professional development (CPD) course for event safety professionals on Crowd Psychology for Crowd Safety Management, including with Safe Events (Global), the Event Safety Institute, and the Event Safety Academy. Covid-19: I participated in the SPI-B advisory sub-group of SAGE and of two British Psychological Society Covid-19 task force working groups. I am a member of the behavioural subgroup of Independent SAGE.
