My work falls into three main strands

Strategic Research leadership:

As Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor I lead on preparations for the next submission to the Research Excellence Framework; developing and implementing an improved Research Culture; and institutional demand management processes.

Astrophysics Research:

Together with my research team I am trying to understand how galaxies evolve over cosmological time. Our speciality is studying the hidden star formation that obscured from conventional telescopes by cosmic dust. This dust then glows at infrared wavelengths allowing us to see it with space telescopes. I have led major internation projects using e.g. the Herschel Space Observatory, including the Herschel Extragalactic Legacy Project (HELP) and the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey (HerMES). I currently lead the UK's involvement in a NASA mission concept, PRIMA which was recently selected for Phase A study.

Applications of novel data anlaysis techniques and data intensive science traininig:

I am keen on applying the kind of techniques that we use in astrophysics other domains. I've worked with amazing researchers at Sussex on e.g. medical imaging projects, electronic health records and drought forecasting using satellite images. I founded the Data Intensive Science Centre at University of Sussex, DISCUS. I also founded and am deputy director of DISCnet, the Data Intensive Science Centre for doctoral training in the South East Physics Network which has trained over 100 PhD students in data science.

I currently work part-time and spend a day a week with my family.
