BIO
I am a social historian of conflict and revolution in modern Africa, with an emphasis on gender, youth, and emotions. My work broadly addresses masculinities, femininities, age, violence, resilience, suffering, displacement and aid, bringing together African history, humanitarian history, conflict studies, and histories of emotion. I have extensive experience conducting life history interviews with participants in Ethiopia and Somalia, and archival research in a range of international locations. My forthcoming monograph, Gender, Joy and Resistance in the Tigray Wars, looks at women's lives in war in northern Ethiopia, as armed combatants, activists, refugees and survivors.
I completed my PhD at the University of Reading in April 2024, funded by the South West and Wales Doctoral Training Parternship. I then held a postdoctoral research position at the University of Exeter, working with Professor Stacey Hynd on the AHRC Standard Grant 'Children of War: Evolving Global and Local Understandings of Child Soldiering in Africa'.
