BIO
Ayşe is a doctoral researcher in the Department of Law at the University of Sussex. Her research examines how climate change litigation influences biodiversity conservation and broader environmental governance frameworks. Using a comparative legal approach, she analyses biodiversity-related litigation across jurisdictions including Brazil, Colombia, Italy, China, and Australia to explore how legal action functions as a tool of environmental governance.
Ayse holds an LLM in General Legal Studies from the University of Bristol, where she was awarded a Distinction for her dissertation on biodiversity regulation under the UK's Environment Act 2021. She earned her undergraduate degree in law from Atilim University in Ankara, Turkey, with honours and a full academic success scholarship.
Before starting her doctoral studies, Ayse practised law in Istanbul, focusing on corporate governance and compliance. She is a qualified member of the Istanbul Bar Association. Alongside her academic work, she currently works as an Academic Content Facilitator at the University of Sussex, contributing to widening participation through academic masterclasses and outreach activities. She has completed certified training in higher education pedagogy (UKPSF). In addition to her academic and legal work, Ayşe previously worked as a nursery practitioner, an experience that developed strong interpersonal and care oriented skills and qualities that inform her rights-based approach to law and governance.
Ayse’s research is situated within public law, with particular interests in environmental law, administrative law, constitutional law, and international public law. Her work engages with concepts such as legal pluralism, environmental rights, and the evolving role of courts in biodiversity governance. She is a member of the Sussex Sustainability Research Programme (SSRP) and the Socio-Legal Studies Association (SLSA).
