My research takes a distinctive and original approach to the study of international economic law. I challenge the orthodox view that the problems of international trade and investment will be resolved once a strong normative regime is created. I have argued in my published work instead that the area is so politically dynamic that conventional ideas about how regulation works are inappropriate. The value and very idea of "regulation" is often neglected in existing scholarship but lies at the centre of my work.
Another strand to my work considers the place and function of trade instruments in global agrifood supply chains from a food systems perspective. This has led me to engage with colleagues from natural sciences (climate science, food science and nutrition, psychology, and food systems analysis), business (supply chain management), and social science (political economy and law), on challenge-led research around the sustainability of global agrifood supply chains to reduce negative impacts on human health, biodiversity and the climate to meet net-zero targets. As a result of this collaboration, I am working on an article embedding multidisciplinary methodology into international agrifood trade law, drawing on the work of Bruno Latour.
