BIO
I am Research Professor at the UK Trade Policy Observatory (UKTPO) and the Department of Law at the University of Sussex. I joined the UKTPO in 2024 having previously held positions in Law Schools at the Universities of Leeds and Warwick, UCL, Leicester University and the University of Sheffield. I have been Visiting Professor at several law schools in the USA, including the University of Minnesota, University of Michigan and Boston College Law School.
I have published widely in the area of international trade law, with a focus on agricultural trade, and have spoken about my research to public and private sectors audiences throughout the world.
I am a member of the UK Trade and Agriculture Commission, with responsibility for scrutinising the UK's new free trade agreements on issues of animal and plant health, animal welfare and enviromental protection.
Previously, I was the Special Adviser to the UK House of Lords EU Energy and Environment Sub-Committee for its report, 'Brexit and Agriculture' and to the UK House of Commons International Trade Committee for its scrutiny of post-Brexit trade agreements. I gave expert evidence to the House of Commons International Trade Committee, Environment Food and Rural Affairs Committee, and the Committee on the Future Relationship with the European Union; the National Food Strategy for England and Wales; the UK Trade and Agriculture Commission; and the Scottish Parliament. I was an invited expert for the European Commission, Working Group on EU Food Safety in Nutrition in 2050; the joint DEFRA/UK Treasury, 'Balance of Competence Review: Agriculture,' evaluating the relationship between the EU and the UK; and to the Yorkshire Agricultural Society's Farmers' Scientist Network on the impacts of Brexit on UK farming.
Currently, I am Co-I on two funded projects: a Horizon Europe project, 'Transforming Food Systems (including food trade) between countries in South East Africa and the EU' (FoSTA-Health) where I co-lead a work package with Dr Betty Waized (Sokoine University, Tanzania) focusing on facilitating export markets for fresh fruits and vegetables from Tanzania and South Africa into the EU. And, the 'Co-Centre for Sustainable and Resilient Food Systems on the island of Ireland', working with Dr Christian Reynolds and Dr Rebecca Wells (City University), Professor Tim Benton (Chatham House) and Professor Joe McMahon (UCD).
