Dr Ana Peres is an Assistant Professor in Law at the University of Sussex and a socio-legal researcher specialising in international trade law. Her work examines how trade rules and institutions are evolving in a geopolitical context to address the challenges of the green and digital economy, with a particular focus on the role of emerging economies. She holds a PhD from King’s College London and an MPhil from the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Dr Peres is a qualified Brazilian lawyer, admitted to the bar in 2011.

Dr Peres engages closely with policy and practice. From 2023–2025 she was a Parliamentary Academic Fellow at the UK House of Commons, working with the Economic Policy and Statistics section of the House of Commons Library, as well as supporting the Business and Trade Committee and the House of Lords International Agreements Committee. She authored research briefings on the WTO, digital trade, and trade agreements, and co-hosted a Library Talk on tariffs. She has also worked with the UK Department for Business and Trade, contributing to an Academic Challenge Panel. Her prior experience includes consultancy work for the International Trade Centre on investment facilitation for development and a traineeship at the Brazilian Mission to the WTO, where she worked on disputes before the Dispute Settlement System and negotiations on investment facilitation.

Her current project, Rethinking WTO Lawmaking for a Multipolar Trading System: Addressing the Challenges of the Green and Digital Global Economy (2025–2027), is funded by the British Academy, and she is preparing a monograph on this theme (Hart Publishing, forthcoming 2027). Her research has appeared in the World Trade Review and the Brazilian Journal of International Law, and she has contributed chapters to edited volumes in Brazil. Dr Peres is committed to maintaining strong ties with Brazilian academic and policy networks while expanding her research to reach international audiences and top journals.

She is regularly invited to speak on WTO law, trade and development, geopolitics, and the role of developing countries in the multilateral trading system. She has presented her work at the WTO, the UK Trade Policy Forum, the Society of International Economic Law Global Conference, the American Society of International Law, and the Trade and Public Policy (TaPP) Network. She contributes to the UK Trade Policy Observatory (UKTPO) blog, has appeared on the Trade Bites podcast, and is an invited lecturer in the Japanese Government's Institute of Developing Economies Advanced School (IDEAS) programme, "Developing Countries in the World Trading System".

Dr Peres is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and an active member of the international trade law community, including the UK Trade Policy Observatory (UKTPO), the IEL Collective, the Society of International Economic Law (SIEL), and the TaPP Network.

She works in English and Portuguese and has working proficiency in French, Spanish, and Italian.
