BIO

Over the years I have remained fascinated with questions of morality, ethics and power within the relationship between corporations and their stakeholders, especially consumers. Specifically, I have sought to better understand the moral dimensions of markets, how corporations organise and communicate about their social and environmental responsibilities and how consumers themselves experience marketplace responsibility. This connects to research topics such as corporate and consumer responsibility, sustainable and ethical consumption as well as alternative and moral markets with a more recent interst in modern slavery and the ethics of artifical intelligence. Together, these themes align closely with UoS 2035 progressive futures agenda, with research conducted in the areas of human flourishing, sustainability and digital and data futures.

In addition to this marketplace focus, I have also extended those underlying questions of ethics, morality and power to other stakeholder groups, most recently with respect to marginalized and exploited labour, in my research on Modern Slavery, where I'm now looking to explore the more coercive aspects of consumption as a site of (un)freedom.

Methodologically, I've tended to pursue qualitative approaches, utilizing textual, discursive, narrative and dialogical forms of analysis. This is because language plays an important constitutive role in how corporations and consumers communicate about morality, ethics and responsibility (i.e. the language we use shapes thought and practice).
