Dr Jon Powell is a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and Assistant Professor in the Department of Engineering and Design, where he convenes the Engineering Foundation Year and serves as Head of Educational Enhancement. Over more than fifteen years, he has taught engineering and physics across the UK, Thailand, and Saudi Arabia, combining industrial experience with academic rigour to create inclusive, employability-focused learning.

His current research is in engineering education, where he investigates inclusive assessment design, scaffolded scientific writing, and criterion-referenced self-assessment to support widening-participation students. Jon's earlier research relates to materials and sustainable energy, including catalyst and sorbent development for hydrogen production and the co-extrusion of ceramics for solid oxide fuel cells — the subject of his PhD at the University of Birmingham.

Dr Powell contributes to national engineering education policy as an advisory group member for QAA subject benchmark statements and as a member of an Engineering Council task and finish group. He holds extensive accreditation and professional-formation roles with the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3), where he chairs accreditation panels and the IOM3 Book Series Committee. He is a Fellow of IOM3 (FIMMM) and a Fellow of Advance HE (FHEA).
