The Embalmer: Cannibalism as Politics and Social Resistance in Soviet and Contemporary Literature
2025-26 Senior PGR Events Officer
Doctoral Tutor
2022-23 Sussex Research Hive Scholar
My main research interests focus around cannibalism as a form of embodied resistance to social and political regimes, particularly with regards to individuality and communism in Soviet Russia and feminist social reproduction and oppressive heteronormative expectations in contemporary Japan, as well as cannibalism as a form of erotic transgression and boundary dissolution. The thesis approaches the question of cannibalism through many lenses, including Marxist Feminism, psychoanalysis and ethics.
Additionally, I am a published writer of short and flash fiction, and an experienced longform writer. My writing interests are in absurdist fiction, speculative fiction, surrealist literature and micro fiction. My current novel is a surrealist, speculative historical fiction novel set in the years post Lenin's death, and deals with individualism, cannibalism as erotic, and the ownership of the body.
I have also been an educator for many years, with experience ranging from KS3 all the way through to university level. I am keenly interested in ensuring a furture for the Arts, which involves intervention in the earliest years of education. In a climate that attempts to minimise and reduce funding in the Arts and prirotises STEM, this is crucial.
