Greetings! -- I am a Professor of Development Economics, Innovation, and Global Health at the University of Sussex Business School's Department of Economics. Additionally, I hold visiting professorships at EMLYON Business School in France, earlier at MBZUAI in Abu Dhabi, the world's first AI University, at the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition (MIPLC) in Munich, Germany, and at Indian School of Business, also Ahmedabad University, India. In 2025 I was appointed as a Founding Fellow of the Royal Economic Society, UK. I am also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in UK. Earlier, I was a Visiting Fellow (2019-24) and a Campbell and Teller National Fellow (2018-19) at Stanford University's Hoover Institution. Prior to joining the Department of Economics at U-Sussex Business School in February 2024, I served as Professor and Reader of Economics of Innovation & Global Health at SPRU-Sussex.

During my tenure at SPRU-Sussex, I was:

Before joining U-Sussex, I was ICICI Bank Chair and Chairperson of CMHS as full time faculty in IIM Ahmedabad, India. I have also been a full time faculty at IIM Bangalore and Indian School of Business. My India stints demonstrate a passion for solving grand challenges in development, innovation and global health with solutions in the Anthropocene coming from the Global South. This is also exhibited by what is perhaps the first MOOC on edX on Healthcare Strategy in India and by being the founding Co-Chairperson of a novel Clinician Management Program (MPM-Cx) for doctors done collaboratively with DailyRounds during my IIM Ahmedabad days.

My academic journey began with undergraduate and postgraduate studies in civil engineering and management at IIT Roorkee and IIM Calcutta, respectively. I later earned my Ph.D. and M.Phil. in Public Policy and Management from Carnegie Mellon University. Before joining academia, I worked as a business journalist and analyst with the Economic Times Intelligence Group (Times of India group) in Mumbai from 2003 to 2005.

I was awarded the prestigious Campbell and Edward Teller National Fellowship at Hoover Institution, Stanford University, from 2018 to 2019 when i spent a year in residence in Stanford campus in Palo Alto. In recent years, I have worked on high-impact policy projects, including:

• Evaluating the United Nations' Multi Partner Trust Fund response to Covid-19 (2020-2021)
• Assessing non-price innovation policy instruments for bio-pharmaceutical R&D with the WHO & Oslo Medicines Initiative (2021-2022)

In summer 2023, I gave an invited keynote on AI & Global Public Health at the World Intelligence Congress in Tianjin, China and on Health Technology Diffusion at Peking University and Nankai University. I also have given an invited public lecture on Vaccine Nationalism and Pandemic Policy at U-KZN, Durban, South Africa in 2024. More recently, I delivered in October 2024, the New Frontiers Keynote on Income Shocks and Women's Health Spending in India at The Usher Institute, University of Edinburgh and at it's Centre for Global Health. I have also been appointed in October 2024, to a technical expert committee by the Department of Science and Innovation, Govt of the Republic of South Africa to review the country's and Greater African region's "Vaccine Innovation and Manufacturing Strategy" towards a holistic pandemic policy for the region.

Beyond these areas of global societal and public policy impact,  I also derive satisfaction by closely working with the next generation of scholars, PhD students and early career researchers. Having earlier graduated 5 PhD students, I am now jointly supervising 3 doctoral students and working collaboratively with ECRs from Northwestern University, U-Mass (Amherst), NUS Singapore, IIM Calcutta, Peking University among others. I firmly believe that it is in the next generation we should transfer our values and principles around evidence based interdisciplinary policy & managerial research.

University academics today also have an important role to play as good citizens and setting empathetic professional standards of excellence. Towards this, it has been my pleasure to serve on the Faculty Promotion Panel of the School of Education (at U-Sussex), for a search in Professorship in Public Health at the Brighton & Sussex Medical School and for SPRU's new Bennett Institute Founding Director Recruitment Panel among other University roles. I also joined Pro-VC Global and Civic Engagement Prof. Robin Banerjee in a 2023 India Road Show for U-Sussex in Delhi & Mumbai relatedly.

I am also particularly proud of my work around inclusion and diversity. I was the Founding Chair of the Novartis Women's Leadership Program earlier at IIM Bangalore which ran 3 cycles, including at ISB. I have papers earlier and ongoing on Gender and Global Health, Gender, STEM education and AI in China and have opined extensively in top outlets on Global Gender Empowerment.
