I enjoy the research and advanced development of wireless electronics and systems, for communication and positioning.

Throughout my career I have been exploring and developing new concepts and practical solutions which could be fully integrated in integrated circuits.  From the 1980s with research at Philips Research and Imperial College London in the UK and with Philips in Nurnberg, I have worked at the leading edge of the new and progressively more complex consumer wireless technologies – paging receivers, digital cordless phones, digital cellular mobile phones, low power Internet of Things connectivity, GPS, and short range radio. 

Software and services have become increasingly powerful and important, and I have been exploiting this in the first consumer software receiver - for GPS applications - and in a spin-out company Geotate creating a system and service for geotagging photographs.  I have also created service databases, products and concepts for positioning using cellular signals, with u-blox and local universities in Italy. This is useful as GPS/GNSS reception indoors is difficult – but users still want to know about their location, which we can do by using other signals that are opportunistically available.

Most recently I have been working for 5 years with IMEC Internet of Things signal processing and modelling team in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, on wireless positioning and radar sensing using short range wireless Bluetooth Low Energy, Ultra Wide Band (UWB), cellular and satellite wireless signals.  This has includes new circuit and signal processing software developments, and projects on

• using wireless technology to assist in the commissioning of devices, for "smart home" installations (in a Belgian collaborative research project)
• Joint Communication and Sensing concepts for future 6G systems (as part of a major Netherlands collaborative research initiative)
