BIO

I pursue a joint career in clinical and academic otology, with an additional interest in global health and sustainability.

My main clinical and academic interest is in chronic otitis media. I undertook a DPhil at the University of Oxford as a Wellcome Trust Clinical Fellow and Phizackerley Scholar at Balliol College, exploring molecular mechanisms in chronic otitis media, and ran the largest global study on otitis media genetics.  My main area od interest now is ear and hearing care in low resource settings, and in particular models of care for the chronically discharging ear.  I am consultant to the WHO Programme for Prevention of Deafness and Hearing Loss.

In addition, I have a longstanding interest in sustainable healthcare, and in particular the environmental and labour rights harms caused by medical supply chains.  I am policy advisor to UK governmemt on such issues, and chaired the first national report into sustainable surgery.
