Pedagogy
Sarah is keen to support the international student experience at the University. This interest draws upon her experience of working closely with international students as a pre-sessional tutor at the University of Southampton and her support of international student transition at the University of Roehampton. Before becoming an Academic Developer, Sarah worked as a Student Academic Success Advisor, providing support to a largely international student community. Sarah's preliminary studies into the potential barriers to learning for non-EU students in the University of Sussex Business School (USBS) was presented at the School’s Teaching and Learning Conference in 2020. Extending this work, Sarah became the co-recipient of both a British Academy Small Research Grant and the Warwick International Higher Education Academy External Collaboration Fund. Both of these funds helped develop research into, and resources to support, the international student experience in UK HE. Sarah has published a journal article on experiences of belonging for international cohorts, and has written an upcoming Routledge chapter on supporting international student transition. She is also currently writing a QAA bid to fund a research project on enhancing the voices of international students across the HE sector. To complement this research, Sarah works with the Student Union at Sussex to try and help improve the experiences of international students at the University.

In her role as Academic Developer, Sarah works with academic staff to implement alternative assessments, develop inclusive teaching practice, create active learning environments, and lots more.

Sarah is a proud member of the Active Learning Network. Knowledge garnered from the Network, helps her to facilitate collaborative learning and project-based learning within the teaching spaces at Sussex.

Humanities
Sarah has presented papers on British modernism in the 1930s at Cambridge University, the Mass Observation Conference, the Modernist Studies Association Conference and the Flying Through the ‘30s Symposium on Air Travel and Interwar Britain. She completed her PhD in 2015 on the reinterpretation of antiquity within the 1930s landscape paintings of Paul Nash and published a catalogue essay for the Tate’s 2016 Paul Nash exhibition. Sarah recently published a journal article in Literature/Film Quarterly on the classical undertones in Humphrey Jennings’ film Making Fashion (1938) and has a book chapter in publication on the motor car as modernist time machine in John Betjeman's Shell Guides. In 2026 Sarah presented research at Sussex Retold on the standing stones of Brighton and is currently working on a book chapter for the conference publication.
