Prof Barbara Philips is both a clinician, working in intensive care medicine and a translational scientist. She studied medicine at King's College Hospital in London before going on to specialist training in Edinburgh. Her research was developed at The Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh whilst working as a clinical research fellow on the liver transplant unit. She conducted research on cerebral haemodynamics and metabolism associated with both chronic and acute hepatic failure. In 1999 she was was appointed to the post of Senior Lecturer at St George's University of London in Intensive Care Medicine where she became a Reader in 2014. She moved to Brighton and Sussex Medical School in 2018 and was appointed as Professor of Intensive Care Medicine in 2021. She also practices as an honorary Consultant Intensivist at the Royal Sussex County Hospital
