Storm is an organic/medicinal chemist by training, with a passion for the application of organic synthesis to medicinal applications.

He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Cambridge, before obtaining his PhD on the collaborative GSK/University of Strathclyde scheme, under the supervision of Professor Billy Kerr and the sadly missed Dr Vipul Kumar. During this he worked on diverse projects, including rhodium C-H activation, novel Pauson-Khand reactions and was instrumental in the development of new chiral oxaborininol reversible covalent drugs.  

After his PhD he joined the group of Professor John Spencer as a PDRA at the University of Sussex between 2017 and 2021. During this time he worked on a variety of successful organic and medicinal chemistry projects, including developing a new iridium catalysed thiazole methodology, building a platform for high-throughput synthesis/screening of the PHIP-2 bromodomain inhibitors, preparing organometallic analogues of the bromodomain inhibitor JQ-1, and working as part of the COVID moonshot collaboration. In 2021 he moved to UCL, studying the synthesis of oxyluciferins with Professor Jim Anderson. 

In 2023 he was appointed to a permanent position as an assistant professor in synthetic chemistry at the University of Sussex. His current research focuses on organic chemistry (most notably the synthesis and applications of sulfoxonium ylides) and automated synthesis for medicinal chemistry applications. 

His current research team consists of Joe Smy (3rd year PhD student) and Muhammad Razak (1st year PhD student), as well as masters and summer students.
