BIO

I am a composer, sound artist and educator. I have a strong focus on electro-acoustic and collaborative work in dance, music theatre, multi media, experimental film, radio, installation and the concert hall. I was educated at the University of Sussex (BA Hons 1985; MA 1986) and the University of California, Berkeley, (PhD, 2011, Composition), and I am also a graduate in Screen Music of the National Film and Television School (1994). Between 1998 and 2005 I took a break from academia and worked as a sound editor, dialogue editor and sound designer in film and television in the UK and Scandinavia. Thus my interests have taken me through a diverse range of activities and investigations, with music and sound being the connecting force between them.

I see my work as both rooted in music and sound and strongly interdisciplinary. I seek to find the connections between music and other art forms at every level - conceptual, material, rhythmic. My interests coalesce at the borders between disciplines, where music becomes gesture becomes image, in a recursive, reversible journey, evoking contradictory impulses towards movement and stillness. A focal point for my work is recorded sound from a range of sources - vocal, instrumental, environmental, mechanic, and electronic. Current preoccupations include the disembodied / re-embodied nature of recorded sound; time-lapse in audio and visual media, and in particular, robot opera: performance, embodiment, vocality.

At Sussex I am Co-Director of the Centre for Research in Opera and Music Theatre. I am also a Member of the Sussex Digital Humanities Lab.
