Dr Matthew Evans is an Associate Professor in Law, Politics and Sociology and Co-Director of the Sussex Centre for Human Rights Research.

Prior to joining the University of Sussex as a Teaching Fellow in 2016 he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Political Studies (from 2014 to 2016) at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, where he remains attached as a Visiting Researcher. Matthew completed his PhD at the University of York's Centre for Applied Human Rights and also taught at York from 2010 to 2014.

He is the author of Transformative Justice: Remedying Human Rights Violations Beyond Transition (published in 2018) and editor of Transitional and Transformative Justice: Critical and International Perspectives (published in 2019), both in Routledge's Transitional Justice Series, and is editor of Beyond Transitional Justice: Transformative Justice and the State of the Field (or Non-Field), published in Routledge's Directions and Developments in Criminal Justice and Law Series in 2022.

Matthew has also published peer-reviewed articles in leading sociological, legal and political studies journals (including International Politics, the British Journal of Sociology of Education and Social & Legal Studies), plus interdisciplinary journals (such as the Journal of Human Rights and the Journal of Human Rights Practice). He has contributed to blogs including the Social & Legal Studies Blog and the Thesis Whisperer, and has appeared as an interviewee on the LawPod podcast.
