BIO

Working in the field of English for Academic Purposes (EAP), I have taught both International and Home students in developing their academic skills and language so they can support themselves when studying programmes delivered by the University of Sussex. I view this discipline as one which aims to facilitate learning transfer through its pedagogy so that students can notice and apply knowledge of textual analysis and production and other literacies required of their chosen subject areas.

Being a scholarly informed practitioner and academic, my teaching approaches must be guided by careful and extensive consultation of relevant theories relating to discourse analysis, pedagogy and literacy development. I have drawn on aspects of Academic Literacies (Lea and Street, 1998), assessment literacy (Price, 2012) and other theories of discourse analysis (Maton, 2013 and Bruce, 2015) to inform the design and delivery of my EAP teaching materials and module design.

Over the last 5 years I have taken on senior departmental duties, which include: mentoring others within my department and those across the sector to develop their knowledge of EAP and its teaching application; designing and delivering teacher training workshops; disseminating EAP based research and scholarship through presentation and publication; liaising across departments with academic and professional service staff to devise suitable curricula for different cohorts of students. These activities took place in my role as tutor, module convenor and module designer across Foundation Year, Undergraduate, and Transnational Educational provision.
