RESEARCH & SCHOLARSHIP SUMMARy
Samantha’s work draws on insights from a range of disciplines and schools of thought within the broad areas of EU law & policy and human rights.
She has researched and written extensively in the area of EU law, governance and constitutionalism in the context of employment (particularly sex discrimination at work and mainstreaming of sex equality legislation), migration and asylum law and policy exploring the multi-faceted roles and philosophical underpinnings of law and hybrid forms of regulation.
In her areas of expertise Samantha’s research seeks to study and critique the constant transformative and evolving paths and phases of development of the European Union and EU law in both its internal and global settings, particularly from the perspective of the individual.
Current research interests are in the field of EU asylum law and policy, especially legislative developments and the judicial activism of the Court of Justice of the EU and the European Court of Human Rights from a human rights perspective. Other areas of research include:
- the promotion of human rights and international labour standards in EU external trade law and policy and, in this context, the relationship between the European Union and other International organisations as well as its relationship with third countries.
- climate-related migration with a focus on the legal status and legal recognition of climate-induced migrants and forcibly displaced persons, and the integration of migration into climate change/environmental measures and development policies.
Samantha welcomes collaborative research projects, including inter-disciplinary work, and applications for doctoral supervision for any subjects within her research interests, especially in EU asylum law and policy and human rights conditionality in EU external relations generally.
