Nuno's commitment to teaching and student satisfaction has made him dedicate wholeheartedly to high quality and innovative teaching. Throughout the years, Nuno has designed a range of core and specialist UG and PG modules. Nuno has been at the forefront of introducing less traditional teaching and assessment methods (including institutional simulation exercises, MCQ tests, group work, workshops, group and individual oral presentations, portfolios, and feedback sessions) and of the use of e-learning platforms (including Turnitin/Grademark online marking and ‘virtual office hours’). The design and running of an EU Law institutional simulation exercise with the support of a virtual learning environment has been particularly successful, as it was one of the only six courses (amongst 313) in the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Manchester to be ‘Highly Commended’ as the ‘Best on Blackboard’ in 2011. Nuno was also nominated in 2019/2020 to a Sussex Education Award under ‘Teaching to Disrupt’ category.

Nuno is also very keen on promoting research-led teaching. This has led him, for example, to integrate in his Human Rights teaching considerable references to the impact of human rights in the context of relationships between private parties (the theme of several of his pieces of research) and to introduce in his Discrimination Law teaching a thorough discussion of cases that pit the right to freedom of religion against the right not to be discriminated against on grounds of sexual orientation (reflecting one of Nuno's personal research interests). Moreover, Nuno favours forms of assessment that allow students themselves to determine the topic of the assessment, thereby allowing them to become more engaged with the research process.

Nuno welcomes enquiries from prospective PhD researchers. He is currently supervising PhD researchers Vitor Lopes Andrade (writing on SOGI asylum), Cecilia Manzotti (writing on determination of the nationality status of asylum seekers and refugees) and Seyi Ugochukwu (writing on access to legal aid for undocumented migrants in the UK).
