Chris' research interests are in public international law, with a particular focus on the law governing the use of force, collective security law, human rights and international humanitarian law. Past and current research projects have addressed issues such as the international personality of non-state actors and contested states, the contemporary role, relevance, significance and accountability of the United Nations Security Council and its actions in the maintenance of international peace and security, the provision of arms and non-lethal assistance to government and opposition forces, humanitarian intervention and the ‘Responsibility to Protect’, the notion of sovereignty in contemporary international society, cyber operations and international law, the role of international law in international commissions of inquiry, and a comparative study of the regimes regulating the threat or use of force by states and state actors within international law, including international human rights law, the jus ad bellum, the law of the sea, and the law of civil aviation.
