BIO

I work as an artist, writer and researcher, at the crossroads of performance, magic and ecology.

My research focuses on: questions of place, memory, theatrical architecture; the entanglement of human and non-human lives; and, in the last few years, questions of 'magic', particularly the ways in which theatrical magic touches or overlaps with the other meanings of the word (mostly associated with the uncanny, mystical or supernatural).
In 2014 I obtained my PhD from Roehampton University, in the context of the AHRC creative research project Performance Matters.
In 2016 I published my first book, entitled 'In Place of a Show: what happens inside theatres when nothing is happening' (Bloomsbury).
I joined the University of Sussex in 2016, where I teach BA students theory and practice of contemporary performance, and supervise PhD students in areas related to magic, performance and ecology.

Under the stage name Vincent Gambini I have developed several projects of sleight-of-hand magic and illusion.
