Bonnie's current research explores the commodification of environment and the creation of markets in environmental goods and services. She is interested in the intersection between property, environment and technology, for example in the creation of new types of property rights and information systems. This is linked to the changing role of markets in environmental governance and, more generally, the boundary between private rights and public interest. Her recent publications have looked at conservation covenants (Journal of Environmental Law, 2018) and emissions trading (Modern Law Review, 2020).

More generally, she is interested in the idea of exclusivity of ownership and the boundaries of private property. Her PhD thesis investigated the protection of ownership of moveable property in Scots law and she has also published on the criminalisation of squatting in Scotland.

Bonnie led, with Dr Helen Dancer, the UK Earth Law Judgments Project (https://bit.ly/earthjudging). Her other research projects have included a project on how legal structures have shaped experiences of urban growing spaces during the Covid-19 pandemic (with Dr Helena Howe) and a interdisciplinary research project on soil carbon sequestration (with Professor Dave Goulson and Dr Chris Sandom in the School of Life Sciences).

Bonnie is available to supervise PhD students in the areas of property law, property theory and environmental law.
