TEACHING & SUPERVISION SUMMARy

WHERE:

I have taught Film Studies at the University of Sussex, the University of Nottingham, and, as a graduate student, at SOAS, University of London. I have also taught in various guest capacities at institutions overseas, from Nottingham Ningbo in China to USC and Duke University in the USA.

WHAT:

I teach Film Studies modules at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level. I've taught introductory modules on all areas of Film Studies - from close analysis, to film history, to the cultural industries - as well as more specialist areas, such as Chinese-language cinemas, documentary film, and film festivals.

PhD SUPERVISION:

I am particularly interested in supervising PhD students working in any area of:

  • Chinese-language audiovisual media
  • Documentary film and television
  • Transnational cinema
  • Queer and sexuality studies

I am also interested in contributing to PhDs in Creative and Critical Practice which may touch on these areas.

I have previously supervised PhDs and MRes dissertations on the figure of the paedophile in contemporary popular film; representations of the Cultural Revolution in post-2001 Chinese film and television; the reception of Fritz Lang in British film criticism; contemporary Chinese art and cultural diplomacy; the construction of authorship in Wu Wenguang's Village Video Project; The Muppets and the contemporary media franchise.

Current PhDs include practice-based projects on political silence in Jordan, and queer suit fetishism in the PRC.

Prospective PhD students are welcome to email to discuss potential topics, and the process of applying for a research degree at Sussex.
