BIO
After obtaining my PhD from the University of Milan in 2002, I worked as a Research Associate for various institutions in Europe, namely NIKHEF (Amsterdam), the Cavendish Laboratory (Cambridge), the University of Milano-Bicocca, ETH Zurich, and as an Assistant Professor at the University of Freiburg. In 2013, I joined the Theoretical Particle Physics group of the University of Sussex, where I am now Professor of Theoretical Physics.
I am an expert in the phenomenology of particle physics. My main research interest is the physics of hadronic jets, highly collimated bunches of particles, which are ubiquitous at high-energy colliders, such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
I have developed various theoretical frameworks to predict the properties of events containing jets, aiming both at improving the accuracy in the description of such events, as well as exploiting them as means of finding new physics beyond the well-established Standard Model of elementary particles.
My research involves not only theoretical calculations, but also their implementation in the form of numerical codes, whose output can be directly compared to present or future data. To that end, I employ a variety of numerical methods, especially numerical integrators and Monte-Carlo simulations.
Besides my research activity, I have a number of strategic research responsibilities. As the Head of Research of the Department of Physics and Astronomy and Lead of REF Unit of Assessement 9, I oversee the research activity of the school, nurturing an environment where world-leading research can be performed. I am also involved in various leadership roles at the national level, both in grant and advisory panels.
