Much of my research has been concerned with doctrinal legal issues across a broad range of areas in the law of criminal evidence, human rights and protest law. However, it has also included consideration of wider socio-legal and political issues. I have published in a number of leading peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Legal History, Legal Studies, Public Law, Criminal Law Review and Journal of Criminal Law and have, myself, acted as a reviewer. My current research is on recent protest law developments and an important decision in feminist jurisprudence.

My publications have been cited widely in textbooks and journal articles and have also enjoyed some broader impact. For example, my article ‘Regulatory offences and reverse burdens: the licensing approach’ formed a key part of the ‘Government Response’ by the Government of the Australian Capital Territory to the report Strict and Absolute Liability Offences, published by the Standing Committee on Legal Affairs of the 6th Legislative Assembly.

I am the author of the evidence law textbook Murphy on Evidence (Oxford University Press), which I initially co-wrote with the late HHJ Peter Murphy, before becoming the sole author. It is a work that enjoys an international reputation and seeks to bridge the gap between the academic study of law and legal practice. The book is relied on regularly by criminal practitioners and judges as a work of authority and has been cited in judgments at the highest level, both domestically and in the common law world.

My current teaching is in Criminal Law, the Law of Evidence and the Protest Law. I also supervise the Criminal Justice Law Clinic under the umbrella of Sussex Clinical Legal Education and am available to supervise PhD students with interests in my areas of expertise.
