RESEARCH & SCHOLARSHIP SUMMARy

My current research focuses on practice-based documentary investigations of place, tourism, identity and social change. I am developing a new collaborative documentary project revisiting Of Holidays and Olives almost two decades later, Of Holidays and Olives – Reprise (working title). This follow-up study aims to revisit the original mountain and coastal locations in Crete to examine how continued tourism development within the current polycrises environment, including the climate crisis, continues to transform experiences of place and belonging for locals and tourists alike. It also contributes to the pertinent role of documentary practice in generating public and scholarly understanding.

Alongside my independent filmmaking, I have contributed to collaborative academic research projects. As filmmaker and visual communications specialist for the ERC-funded CITSEE project at the University of Edinburgh, I produced eight documentary shorts as academic research portraits and directed and edited The Divided (2016), investigating citizenship, identity and belonging in the post-Yugoslav states. Through this I developed methods for combining rigorous academic research with accessible audiovisual forms.
