BIO
Trained as a climate scientist in Canada, I received my Ph.D from McGill University. Since then, I have worked at the University of Wisconsin at Madison and at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). Most recently, I was a visiting scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR, 2015). Previously, I held the post of two visiting Professors at the Department of Earth System Science of Tsinghua University (2019-2022), and at School of Geographic Sciences of Fujian Normal University (2024-onwards), respectively.
In addition to my research activities, I have tried to excel in my teaching knowledge and skills. I am an elected Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) and hold a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education from the University of Sussex.
Role
I am a Reader (aka, Associate Professor) in Climate Sciences at Sussex.
I am looking for talented postgraduate students to join my research group. There are many ways to secure a scholarship for four-year D. Phil programs in the UK.
For example, Commonwealth Scholarship is a good opportunity to apply for your D.Phil. program in the UK.
My research interests have covered a wide range of topics related to understanding climate and Earth system sciences and their impacts on human society. I am very keen to understand the long-term effects of climate changes on human society.
Currently, I supervise Ph.D. students in the following areas:
1) Global and regional land surface-atmosphere interactions.
2) Global and regional hydrological cycles, including flood risk assessments.
3) Global and regional carbon cycle dynamics.
4) The tropical climate dynamics (e.g., ENSO and global monsoons, ENSO and MJO).
5) Climate modelling at global and regional scales and for past and future (e.g., evaluating model performances, understanding abrupt climate changes).
6) The roles of dust aerosols in the climate systems with foci on the African dust and the Asian Loess Plateau.
7) The African climate systems for the Sahara and Sahel regions.
Community and Business
I was a member of the peer-review college for NERC (2012-2018). Previously, I was a member of peer-review college for the Romanian National Council for Scientific Research, and a member of peer-review experts for the Seventh Research Framework Programme. In the USA, I was an invited member of the panelists for the US National Science Foundation (NSF). I was also invited to the PAGES 1st Young Scientists Meeting (YSM) – Retrospective Views On Our Planet's Future, Corvallis, Oregon, USA:
I am an invited member of the Editorial Board for Asia-Pacific Journal of Atmospheric Sciences published by Springer.
I am an invited committee member of the International CLIVAR/PAGES Working Group, which is part of the World Climate Research Programme (2014-present).
I was an invited panel member of NERC Peer Review College (2012-2018).
I am an invited panel member for British Council Research Programme (2012-present).
I am an invited panel member for the Newtown Fund Programme (2012-present).
I am a faculty member affiliated with Sussex Centre for Coastal Research, Sussex Centre for World Environmental History, and Sussex Asia Centre.
