I am Associate Professor in Middle East History and Co-Director of the Middle East and North Africa Centre at Sussex (MENACS). 

I am a global historian with particular interests in the Middle East and Latin America. My research and teaching focuses on themes of migration, colonialism and anti-imperialism in the 19th and 20th centuries. I also have an interest in the intersections between history and storytelling, as explored in my recent book, The Lives and Deaths of Jubrail Dabdoub (or How the Bethlehemites discovered Amerka), (Stanford University Press, 2023), and the Planet Bethlehem archive project I co-direct (https://planetbethlehem.org). 

From Dec 2023 to Sep 2025 I am holder of an AHRC Research, Development and Engagement grant, working on the project 'The Palestinian Americas: revolutionary struggle across the global south, 1950-1979'. This project involves visiting fellowships in El Salvador and the Centro de Estudios Arabes, University of Chile.

I completed my PhD in 2010 at the University of Cambridge where I spent a further 3 years as Research Fellow, before coming to Sussex in 2013.

I have previously held visiting fellowships at the Centre for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) in London, and at Bethlehem University in Palestine.
