I began working in Higher Education in 1989 and have experience across a wide range of learning- and teaching-related activities: I have designed and taught initial and in-service teacher education programmes for English Language Teachers; designed and taught courses and modules in English language, English for Academic Purposes, English for Specific Purposes (English for Educators, Business English) and academic literacy at foundation, under- and post-graduate levels; held the role of Director of Continuing Professional Development in the School of Media, Arts and Humanities; convened teacher education programmes, and the core Academic Development module of the central foundation years programme, taken by up to 820 home students annually; written English for Business examination papers for the Royal Society of Arts; been an examiner for the B2 First exam (formerly Cambridge First Certificate in English), and London Chamber of Commerce & Industry English for Business exams; and participated in quality assurance activities as an external member of validation panels and as an external examiner.

I am an award-winning educator having been made a Jisc Community Champion, won three University of Sussex teaching awards and been shortlisted for a further three, and a Santander Universities Digital Inclusive Practice Award. My latest textbook for learners of English was a finalist in the 2024 British Council ELTons Awards for Innovation in English Language Teaching & Learning in the Excellence in Course Innovation category, and winner of the Judges’ Commendation for Environmental Sustainability and Climate Action.

I have published four textbooks for English language learners (close to a million copies sold worldwide) as well as a learning object The Academic Writing Guide. My most recent textbook, Develop Your English: with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, is a free-to-access upper intermediate-advanced level (B2-C1) e-textbook for English language learners, based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It represents a departure from much published English language teaching material in that it incorporates a global perspective into the language learning process with a focus on developing sustainability literacy and global citizenship, encouraging students to formulate and articulate their responses to global challenges.
