BIO
I am a Professor of Energy and Society and Director of UKRI-funded £15m Energy Demand Research Centre (EDRC), based at Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU). I am also member of the Sussex Energy Group, which I co-directed between 2021 and 2024.
As a social scientist, I have a specific interest in how we can transition our energy, housing and transport systems to help create a just and fair Net Zero society. This means ensuring equal benefits from low carbon technologies and practices for everyone, as well as a fair distribution of costs and energy demand solutions. I previously led a project on the interlinkages between fuel poverty and transport poverty, and the Equity and Justice theme at UK-wide Centre for Research into Energy Demand Solutions (CREDS).
My research has been published widely in journals such as Nature Energy, Global Environmental Change, Research Policy, Environmental Innovation and Societal Transitions, Energy Research and Social Science, Environment and Planning A, Energy Efficiency, Energy Policy, and Technology Analysis and Strategic Management. I regularly advice and work with different stakeholders and partners, including government departments, not-for-profit organisations, business and consultants. In 2024, I was selected as member of the Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee (DPTAC), which provides independent advice to the Department of Transport.
My awards include for example the University of Sussex Business School Research Excellence Award for Emerging Scholars in 2019, the UKRI Energy Demand Research Champion in 2022, and Highly Ranked Scholar for low-carbon economy (#3rd in the world) by ScholarGPS in 2024 (#6th in 2022).
