BIO
Tanya Kant is a Associate Professor in Media and Cultural Studies (Digital Media) at the University of Sussex. She is author of Making It Personal: Algorithmic Personalization, Identity and Everyday Life (2020, Oxford University Press) and has published work on AI, social media profiling, digital media ethics, algorithmic literacy, digital identity practice, personalization and broadcasting, and bots. She is co-managing editor of open access publishing platform REFRAME and is currently Academic Lead for the UoS 'AI Literacy for Communicators' CPD short programme.
She is currently working on projects relating to generative text AI, data profiling and AI and advertising. Her newest industry work focuses on (mis)uses of generative text AI in the PR and comms industries, and how such usages relate to wide questions of human authenticity in a cultural landscape increasingly dominated by AI. She has presented at a number of conferences, industry events and festivals including the South Africa National Arts Festival, Brighton Digital Festival, Association of Internet Researchers annual conference, Royal Society Filter Bubbles workshop, Brighton Paid Social Show, Digital Existence conference and Apps and Affect conference. She has worked with the Open Rights Group, Ofcom, ASA, MIT and Full Fact on data ethics, misinformation and personalisation.
Dr Kant is co head of subject for Media, Journalism and Cultural Studies and Industry, Innovation and Engagement Lead in the Faculty of Media, Arts and Humanities (MAH).
