RESEARCH & SCHOLARSHIP SUMMARy
I am interested in human visual perception, especially in how we perceive visual movement, visual illusions, and visual art. My research on motion perception has used a range of visual displays, from simple patterns of dots or bars to complex, structured dynamic stimuli. My research practice combines psychophysical experiments with computational modelling. An example of recent work in this area, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, tests whether a well-known illusion of visual motion is actually caused by variations in the size of the pupil in the eye while viewing the illusion pattern.
Research on visual art investigates the extent to which concepts, methods and findings in vision science can improve our understanding of visual art. An example of recent work in this area involves comparing the pixel statistics of photographs to those of paintings spanning several centuries, in order to assess whether and why paintings depart from the pixel statistics of comparable natural scenes.
