Evaluation of health interventions: Dry January, Meat-Free Monday, healthy lifestyle guidelines
- I have an ongoing interest in how to support people to change their behaviour. For example, my numerous studies of Dry January have demonstrated the various short- and longer-term benefits of taking part in the alcohol abstinence challenge, and have helped to improve the support given to participants. The findings of this research were also a key influence on the decision to initiate Dry January in France.
Understanding young people's health-related behaviour: alcohol use, sexual behaviour, use of health services
- I have conducted various studies of healthy and unhealthy behaviour among young people. A key focus of these studies has been how to learn from young people about how to enact healthy behaviour – e.g., we used discussions with non-drinkers and light drinkers to develop classroom materials and activities focused on learning how to socialise without feeling the need to drink.
Sexual behaviour and health: healthy and risky behaviour, sexual wellbeing, use of testing and treatment services, relationship characteristics and satisfaction
- For over 25 years, I have been involved in various studies of sexual behaviour and sexual heath. An important focus is the Australian Study of Health & Relationships, which entails interviews with a representative sample of 20,000 people. However, I also conduct smaller-scale quantitative and qualitative work to better understand what leads to better sexual wellbeing.
Gender and health-related behaviour
- A key interest is how social discourses of gender are internalised and enacted. For example, I have used survey and interview methods to understand how people's beliefs about masculinity and femininity influence their behaviour in the various domains referred to above.
Linking quantitative and qualitative methods
- I have an interest in using various mixed methods designs to enhance knowledge of how social- and individual-level factors combine to influence health and well-being. This has resulted in papers based on samples ranging from one person to over 20,000 people.
