ProfKeith Caldecott

Professor of Genome Stability (Genome Damage and Stability)

BIO

Keith Caldecott obtained his BSc (Hons) at Sheffield Unversity (1987) and developed an interest in how cells repair DNA strand breaks during his PhD in the laboratory of Penny Jeggo, at the Medical Research Council’s National Institute for Medical Research in London (1990). Keith's interest in DNA repair continued during postdoctoral fellowships in California with Larry Thompson at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and with the Nobel laureate Tomas Lindahl at the Cancer Research UK's laboratory at Clare Hall, London. In 1995, Keith established his own laboratory at the University of Manchester, and in 2002 moved to the Genome Damage and Stability Centre (GDSC); a multi-disciplinary centre-of-excellence funded jointly by the MRC and the University of Sussex. 

The Caldecott lab is focussed on identifying new human DNA repair genes and unraveling the link between defects in DNA strand break repair and human genetic disease. This work has uncovered new genetic causes of neurodegeneration, such as mutations in the human DNA repair genes PNKP, TDP2, and XRCC1, and has enabled the lab to assist clinicians worldwide in the molecular and genetic diagnosis of DNA damage-associated hereditary diseases.

Keith has been elected to EMBO, the Academy of Medical Sciences (FMedSci), and is a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS). Keith is also Director of the Genome Damage and Stability Centre. For more information please visit the sites below (hyperlinks are in the blue box on the left)
