TEACHING & SUPERVISION SUMMARy


WHERE
I taught modules in Music Informatics and Generative Creativity in the department of Informatics at the University of Sussex in the early 2000s. Since 2015 I have taught in the Music department, Liberal Arts degrees and Conservation Biology, with co-supervision in Informatics, Ecology and Evolution and Anthropology. 

Since 2020 I have co-facilitated a summer programme at CAMP in the french Pyrenees and online. I also contribute to European Doctoral and masters training including at Oulu University, Orpheus Institute and most recently on the pan-European Erasmus Masters ReSound. 

 

WHAT
I currently teaching topics broadly related to soundscape and listening across various degrees. This includes technical approaches in creative music technology. In the past I taught creative coding and evolutionary, adaptive and generative systems. 

 

PhD SUPERVISION  

I am happy to receive doctoral proposals to start in 2027 onwards and happy to support keen early career researchers in gaining funding. I am currently most interested in transdisciplinary soundscape research to address ecological and cultural issues or imagine better futures.

  • Self-supervised, interpretable AI for conservation acoustics with Ivor Simpson (Informatics)
  • Co-creative acoustic methods as participatory action research with indigenous communities to counter ecocide with Evan Killick (Global/ Anthropology)
  • Experimental systems luthiary with biologically-inspired, complex, adaptive or hacked systems, with Chris Kiefer, Evelyn Ficarra and Thor Magnusson (Music)
  • Qualitative approaches to soundscape analysis to shift human-nature relations at University of Falmouth

  • Fiona Miller (2025) Sensing sound: integrating psychophysiology and phenomenology to investigate the role of audible frequencies in self-regulation. (PhD in Music, co-supervised with Hugo Critchley (Neuroscience))
  • Cliff Hammet (2022) Nightsniffing - Figuring bats as unruly stakeholders through ambulatory interfaces with urban planning data (PhD in Creative and Critical Practice)
