Indigenous botanist Robin Wall Kimmerer suggests that it is not the planet that is broken, but our relationship with her. Since 2015, my research has been motivated by the possibility that learning to listen better can help.

I grew up playing chamber music (cello) and studied Psychology (BSc) at Leeds University,  Evolutionary and Adaptive Systems (MSc) and Computer Science and AI (PhD). These experiences underpin creative and empirical interdisciplinary research in sonic (complex) systems at the interstices of music, technology and ecology. This includes improvisation, composition, field recording, instrument building and computational analysis of natural acoustic environments within the emerging field of ecoacoustics, braided with ideas and methods from adaptive and complex systems.

I am particularly interested in developing soundscape as a nexus for human, technological and ecological research both theoretically, for example through multispecies ecosemiotics, and practically through applied interdisciplinary research in environmental and biocultural conservation. This includes machine listening for ecological assessment, wilderness mapping and participatory action research to support indigenous-led conservation efforts.
